Meet the President
Welcome to MERC! I'm looking forward to meeting all of you personally over the next school year. This August marks the beginning of my seventh year as both a MERC member and a teacher. After teaching first grade at Arrowhead for the last six years, I am moving up to second this year. I am looking forward to the challenges that a new curriculum and grade level will offer me.
As a rookie teacher, I was asked to serve on the MERC committee. Not knowing what this was, I diligently showed up to each meeting, sat in the back quietly, returned to school and passed out whatever fliers they asked of me. In my six years with MERC, I've seen great changes and forward advancements; from raising membership to getting our finances in the black to making meetings more meaningful and reaching out to the community, MERC has come a long way.
It is my hope to continue the enrichment of this wonderful organization. Katie Peila (VP), Deb Powell (Secretary), Corrie Douglas (Treasurer), Liz Fellerer (Membership), and Ruth Ferris (Past President) have been working all summer long to ensure that your time spent at MERC meetings is well spent and will leave you a better educator and community member. Our goals this year are to continue to bring MERC into the 21st Century. We will keep our online presence alive with Facebook, Twitter, and our website. We will be focusing on how the new Common Core Standards will affect our teaching, our students, and literacy in general. We will also be focusing on how new technology can help us spread the joy of reading and writing to our community. Finally, MERC will be expanding our reach into the community with service projects such as Saturday Live, Book It Explorers, Community Sponsors, the Young Authors Conference and a potential partnership with Young Families.
Again, thank you for being an integral part of this organization. The board welcomes you!
